KELLEY - Primal Skills that are Still Around Today

We’ve come a long way since the primitive days in the sense that we have tools and technology to help us maximize and perfect our skills. But it’s important that we never forget where we came from.

We’ve come a long way since the primitive days in the sense that we have tools and technology to help us maximize and perfect our skills. But it’s important that we never forget where we came from.

Let’s take a look back at some of the most old-school skills that we’re still using today.

Spears - Often, the first thing that comes to mind for many people when discussing primitive tools and skills is going to be spears. You can find plenty of resources showing how to make one using a pole and common items.

Navigating with the stars - Many sailors used to navigate with the stars in maritime history, and it’s still possible to do so today (you know, if the city skyline isn’t blocking your view). The North Star (AKA Polaris) is the only star in the sky that doesn’t appear to move. We’ve all heard stories of folks using the North Star to navigate their way home, so we know it’s worked in the past. If you haven’t already mastered this, it could be a life-saving skill that comes in handy when you least expect it.

Navigating using the sun - The most basic aspect of this skill is knowing that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. If you’re in the northern hemisphere, the sun is due south; if you’re in the southern hemisphere, it’s due north. You can even use the sun as a rough guide for determining east and west, but this won’t always be accurate since the Earth tilts on its axis.

Using the sun to tell time - We know, you all have watches. But being overly prepared can save your life. Get to know the position of the sun at various times throughout the day in order to have a better idea of how many hours of sunlight you have left at any given time.

Identifying plants Identifying poisonous plants and knowing how to treat results of handling the wrong ones can change everything. This goes way back to the foraging days when folks didn’t have Google to double-check plants. Next to mastering fire, a knowledge of plants is considered one of the most difficult, complex and one of the truer signs of being a genuine expert in survival

Let’s be a community of survivalists who never forget where we came from. What other primitive skills do you still keep sharp?
