The Easiest 3 Things You Can do to Take Care of Your Knife
Each knife requires a different level of care, but here are a few basic tips to get you started. If you’re not at least doing these things, you need to start now -- or you can say goodbye to your favorite knife.
Clean after use - After using your knife, always wipe the blade carefully with warm, soapy water to remove sap and dirt, and allow to dry thoroughly. Always make sure the sheath is dry before placing the knife back into it.
Store safely - If you’re not going to use your knife for a while, I recommend you keep it in a safe place. If you really want to be safe, apply a thin layer of oil or vaseline.
Eliminate tarnish - If your knife does become tarnished but you don’t have access to a buffing wheel, I recommend using a piece of fine grit (1,000+) sandpaper with water.
When it comes down to it, it’s important to know what type of knife you’re using. A stainless steel blade requires less attention, but that doesn’t mean you can neglect it. A carbon steel blade requires regular maintenance, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth it.
Maintaining your favorite knife is important -- not only for functionality, but also for visual appeal (it’s okay, we all like shiny things). Pay attention to your beloved knife and see what it really needs.
